LINING allows irregular mating surfaces to be filled on machine parts. LINING is usually produced by cutting from a sheet. Gaskets used in specific applications, such as high-pressure steam systems, may contain asbestos. However, due to the health hazards associated with asbestos contact, non-asbestos gasket materials are actually used.
It is generally desirable that LINING is made of a material that is produced to some degree so that it can deform and tightly fill the space of its design, including any slight unevenness. Some gaskets require the sealant to be applied directly to the LINING surface to work properly. Some (pipes) LINING are made entirely of metal and rely on the seat surface to complete the seal; use the spring characteristics of the metal itself (reach but not exceed σy, the yield strength of the material). This is a typical "ring joint" (RTJ) or some other metal gasket system. These joints are called R-con and E-con compression joints.
